Q: What is Osteoporosis?

A: Osteoporosis means "porous bone", or bones that have become thin and lost their strength. 


Q: What causes Osteoporosis?

A: One common cause is an insufficient amount of calcium, either too much or too little.


Q: What is the radiologic test that identifies thinning bone?

A: A Bone Density Test or DEXA Scan


Q: What are preventable risk factors for Osteoporosis?

A: The following can have a negative effect on your bone density: excessive alcohol intake, smoking, low body mass index, poor nutrition, vitamin D, eating disorders, inactivity, low dietary calcium intake or frequent falls.


Q: What are non preventable risk factors?

A: The following risk factors cannot be changed: age, gender, family history of Osteoporosis, previous fracture, menopause/hysterectomy and certain medications and other diseases.
